With the continuously release of new products, the demand for the speed to update the products of complex shape nowadays is significantly higher than ever before. A fast, new and effective method to design is needed, therefore, the Reverse engineering technology arises. The Reverse engineering technology and the 3D printing technology, which has caught peoples'attention during recent years, are supplementary to each other, because the model data is got from the Reverse engineering, and the reverse models need 3D printing technology to test and verify. Meanwhile, the demand for products processing is much higher,the NC tools to cut metal is changing, such as geometric angle and groove profile, the research and development for the traditional NC tools become not able to meet the fast-paced demand.In this paper, the new technology is used to research to manufacture the 3D NC milling cutters based on the Reverse engineering technology and the 3D printing technology. The feasibility of the application is confirmed, by conducting experiment and analyzing error.The paper firstly tells about the key technology in the Reverse engineering, analyze the error of the modeling data, and then elaborate the related technology of the 3D printing, especially the source of error from the FDM and its solution.And then the paper takes the typical complex curved surface:3D milling index able cutters as example, the entire experiment is started from Reverse engineering technology to 3D printing technology, by data obtaining from Creaform handheld scanner, data processing by Geomagic Studio, and surface reconstructing by CATIA, and finally applying the device of Dimension to 3D print, furthermore, it compares and analyzes the error between the final printing products and the sample of milling cutters.Finally, the report concludes that the technology based on the Reverse engineering technology and 3D printing technology can greatly improve work efficiency to design and manufacture the products of complex shape with complex surface, which meets the demands of accuracy, but has much error at the corners. The paper proposes solutions of improvement for further research in future.
