Exploration Of Modern Incensory Modelling

Incense utensils refer to the special utensils that are used to burn incenses. In ancient time, the appreciation of incense was a popular activity among celebrities and the upper class. The incense utensils should combine its practical function and decorative function perfectly, as well as conveying some profound symbolic meanings. Therefore, the modes of incense utensils are exquisite. There are many high-quality incense utensils in each dynasty. Nowadays, the appreciation of incense becomes prevalent again. However, the culture of the appreciation of incense in China was interrupted for a long time, so people tend to regard it as symbols such as just an old way of life, or a kind of cultural or religious behavior. These views are not wrong, but could only represent part of this culture. Under the influence of these views, current domestic designs of incense utensils are relatively simple. They are directly based on an ancient model design or using some Chinese traditional symbols in a modern way. In a short term, relying a lot on a traditional model might make the designs easily be accepted by people, but in the future, this excessive reliance on "cultural background" may lead them to rigid designs and lack of creativity. The deeper effect may be that users would ignore the beauty of the appreciation of incense itself.This thesis starts from the behavior of the appreciation of incense, showing the historical development of incense culture and its influence on users, analyzing the behavior of users through their interactions with the utensils, and at last finds out a new visual form. The main concentrations are the interpretation of psychological feelings into a visual way, and making an aesthetic form through creative practices. As it is a long-term process, this thesis is just presenting an experimental result so far.
