The 21 st century is the century of green. And the environmental awareness of people slowly began to be awakened. The fine chemicals are the main direction of the future development of the chemical industry. Therefore the synthesis of fine chemicals intermediates is vital.In this paper, the synthetic process of glycidyl methacrylate(GMA) was studied, the synthesis route of GMA was discussed, and the process conditions of a two-step synthesis of GMA were optimized. Methacrylic acid and epichlorohydrin were used as raw materials, and the proportion of them was n(MMA):n(ECH)=1:1.25. Benzyltriethylammonium chloride and potassium hydroxide were used as a compound catalyst, the proportion of them was n(TEBA):n(KOH)=4:6, and the amount of catalyst was 0.8 wt%. The 4-methoxyphenol whose amount was 0.3 wt% was used as a polymerization inhibitor. The reaction temperature was 85 ?, the reaction time(the addition time of ECH) was 5 h, and the holding time was 1 h.Then the intermediate product of the ring-opening esterification reaction was synthesized. After that, the 50 % aqueous NaOH solution was used as the raw materials of the ring closure reaction, and the amount of it is n(MAA):n(NaOH)=1:1.05. And the reaction temperature was 40 ?, the dropping time of NaOH aqueous solution was 3 h, and the holding time was 2 h. At last, the final product GMA was synthesized. And in this paper, the reaction mechanism of the ring open esterification and the ring closure reaction process were studied.The application development of GMA was also studied in this paper, the route of GMA modified acrylic resin was explored, and the basic performance and technical indicators of acrylic resin with GMA modification were tested. The amount of GMA was 12 %, the amount of AA was between 3 % or 4 %, and the proportion of MMA and BA is m(MMA):m(BA)=1:2. And the emulsifier of emulsion polymerization was composed of cationic emulsifier CTMAB and nonionic emulsifier OP-10, and the proportion of them is n(CTMAB):n(OP-10)=1:1~1:2. The emulsifiers was in an amount of 3 %, the potassium persulfate was used as the initiator, the initiator was in an amount of 0.6 %, the temperature of emulsion polymerization was 80 ?, the monomer pre-emulsion dropping time was 2 h, and the holding time was 3 h. Then polymerization emulsion GMA modified acrylic resin was synthesized. Finally, the performance of modified resin emulsion and film was tested, and the results indicated that the performance of GMA modified acrylic resin is improved.In a word, another path of the synthesis of GMA was developed in this paper. In this technical route, the reaction conditions were mild, the raw materials were easy to get, and the quality and production rate of product could reach industrial requirements. The most important is that the process is green which is in accordance with the requirements of industrial production in the 21 st century. In addition, the application of GMA in the coatings industry was also studied in this paper. And it may promote the continuing development and utilization of GMA.
