Using steel slag as cement admixture is one of the subjects of metallurgical slag resourceful utilization. The problem of using steel slag with low hydraulic activity could be thoroughly solved to achieve the mass-application of steel slag as cement admixture.We investigated the mineral characters in grinding process of mineral liberation and separation processes,as well as explored the effect of grinding,separation and microwave-reaction on RO phase extristic separation to provide basic dates for industrialization of RO phase separation.In this paper,TISCO steel slag was grinded by ball mill, roller press and vertical mill respectively. The grain-size and liberation characteristics of powder made by different comminution mechanisms was analyzed. Pneumatic separation experiments of different steel slag powder were investigated and qualities of products were determined. Temperature rise characteristics of RO phase, Fe3O4 and silicate mineral was analyzed during the process of reaction in microwave field. The microcracks of interface between minerals were observed to analyze the mechanism of liberation enhancement in microwave-assisted comminution.The results show that the distribution width of the steel slag powder mainly depends on the fineness of steel slag powder. The bigger the specific surface area is, the wider particle size distribution will be. With similar fineness, steel slag powder producted by roller press and vertical mill has wider distribution than by ball mill. Vertical mill and roller press could selectively grind steel slag significantly in coarse fraction. The liberation degree of steel slag powder producted by roller press and vertical mill is higher than by ball mill in +55?m and similar to by ball mill in-55?m.The liberation degree of steel slag by grinding could reach 80% when the cut size was limited in 38-55?m.The Newton separation efficiency of RO phase is highest when cut size of the pneumatic separation is about 20?m. With the similar cut size, vertical grinding of steel slag powder prepared RO phase separation effect is best, roller press comes second, ball mill is the worst.In microwave field RO phase and Fe3O4 of steel slag absorbed microwave energy significantly higher than that of silicate phase mainly reflected in obviously different heating rate.It was observed that there were many obvious microcracks between RO phase and silicate phase in steel slag block pretreated by microwave using optical microscope; porosity is three times more than untreated steel slag block.Each grade liberation degree of microwave-assisted grinding product was improved. And the improving effect in + 55 ?m was more remarkable.
