Mg-Li alloy has a quite low strength which limits its further application in aerospace and people has done a lot of studies to improve its mechanical properties. Now there are three kind of primary means to strengthen Mg-Li alloy, which are alloy strengthening, strain hardening and composite strengthening.Inspired by biolayered materials design, the present study attempts to prepare Mg-Li/Al layered composite materials with a good interfacial bonding in order to further explore the effect of layered composite on the basis of the existing strengthening mechanisms. Finally,successful preparation of Mg-Li alloy layered composite material were made and a lot of work has been done to observate metallographic using SEM, EDX, XRD techniques, elastic modulus testing, hardness testing, static compressive mechanical properties testing and other related testing were performed to analyze organizational characteristics and mechanical performance of this layered material.Structures analysis of materials showed Mg-Li/Al laminated composite have a good combination between layers. The study found that for the laminated composite material with different thickness of Mg-Li alloy foil, the hardness between layers showing a significant difference and the interface of aluminum foil and Mg-Li alloy reaches a maximum hardness.Analysis showed that the elastic modulus may increase with the increasing thickness of Mg-Li alloy.Analysis of curves indicated the strength and elastic modulus of all the groups are higher than the original-cast Mg-Li alloy, which is partially due to a strain hardening as well as composite strengthening in the materials. What's more, large amount whixkers observsed between layers played an important role on the increase of strength and elastic modulus, and strength of the laminated composite is probably increased with the remain amount of whiskers.In addition, the outermost layer is Al layer, which might improve the corrosion resistance of the whole composites.
