Composite material is one of the important materials for lightweight materials, such as aerospace, deep-sea resources development, automobile shipbuilding industry and so on. It is expected that the composite material has a higher specific strength,with the development of industry. It is an important system of lightweight composite materials which is filled by hollow glass bead. The density of glass bead filled composites can be reduced by decreasing the viscosity of the resin and increasing the filling amount of the microspheres. So it has important significance to carry out the research of low viscosity resin.Low-viscosity epoxy resin was prepared with E-51 epoxy resin and homemade modified reactive diluents by physical methods. The resin density of 1.143g/cm3 viscosity 285cp at normal temperature and pressure when the amount of the reactive diluent at 40 percent of the resin and to make reasonable predictions on viscosity, density variation of the epoxy resin was modified diluents.Low viscosity of the resin matrix is an important part of the composite material.Although the modified resin’s viscosity is low but higher levels of diluent must have a negative impact on its strength, and therefore need to choose a suitable curing agent reinforcement.Two kinds of amine curing agent cured performance were researched which were triethylenetetramine (TETA) and m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA). All aspects of performance of the m-PDA was superior to the cured product cured TETA. The tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, Shore hardness of the m-PDA cured was higher 38%, 31%, 18%, 1.3%, than TETA cured, water absorption is less 30% than TETA cured. In order to solve the shortcomings on the process about m-PDA curing agent. Under the premise of ensure good process and as little as performance loss explore optimum mixing ratio of the curing agent TETA and m-PDA molar ratio of 1:1, cured casting body stretching,compression, bending strength were 73MPa, 109MPa, 128MPa, modulus were 3242MPa,3095MPa, 3011MPa. Shore hardness of 82 degrees,and water absorption was 0.88% when 100 mins boiled.The density, porosity, mechanical properties, water absorption of composite which make up of low viscosity of the resin and the amount of beads at 25% to 45% hollow glass microspheres were discussed. Prepared a kind of lightweight composite materials which is density 0.52g/cm3, hardness of 62 degrees,tensile strength 16MPa, compressive strength of 40MPa, flexural strength of 24MPa modulus were 2577MPa, 2251MPa and 1985MPa respectively. The materials’ strength and modulus showed significant decreases with the amount of glass beads to increase, and make a reasonable explanation for fluctuation part of them combine with porosity variation. To absorbing of composite materials and the microscopic damage mechanism is analyzed and obtain the reason of composite failure from it.
