Selenium,as an indispensable trace element, has double biological effects for living organisms. If intake is insufficient,it will lead to deficiency disorders,or else selenium poisoning may cause. Its scope of security in the human body is about 40 ?g·d-1 ~ 400 ?g·d-1.In recent years, speciation distribution and content determination of selenium in environmental water have been attracted widely attention, because the selenium pollution becomes more and more serious. In this paper, the source of selenium, physical and chemical properties, biological effects and the environmental behavior of selenium were reviewed. As the main content, the thermal stability, separation and mass spectrometry analysis of different inorganic species of selenium were investigated. The thermal stabilities of Se(?)and Se(?)in HNO3 medium are well. There is no obvious loss of Se(?)and Se(?)happening in high concentration of HNO3 medium even when the sample solution was evaporated to dryness.Compared with HNO3,it is found that the thermal stability of Se(?)and Se(?)in the different concentrations of HCl medium is poor, especially in the high concentration of HCl.With the application of batch technologies, the uptake behavior of Se(?)and Se(?)on the Dowex18 anion exchange resin were investigated. The results showed that the uptake rata of Se(?)and Se(?)on Dowex1x8 resin is so fast. The adsorption process is affected by ionic strength and acidity obviously.Se(?)and Se(?)loaded on the resin can be separated and eluted using different concentration of acid(HCl or HNO3).High resulotion ICP-MS can be applied for determinating Se in water samples. In the concentration range of 1-5 ppb Br-and Ca2+,81Br-and 40Ca2+ have no interference for 82 Se for measurement by HR-ICP-MS.This is mainly due to the poor possibilities of formation of 42Ar40 Ca and 1H81 Br at low concentration of Ca and Br in sample solution.
