The distribution of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in surface sediments from the Jiangsu coast in China were investigated. The sources of PAHs was used to analysed the ralationship between PAHs pollution and anthropogenic activities. The results indicated that concentrations of the low ring PAHs were the main PAHs pollution from the study area. This might results from the heavy traffic of marine transport. As PAHs could be an important pollution to trace the anthropogenic activities. The persistent organic pollutant in the sediments could become an important tracer to evaluate the anthropogenic activities. The concentration of PAHs of Lianyungang Coast ranged from 3.37 ng/g to 118.82 ng/g(mean value 43.28 ng/g),which were generally low compared to other coastal zones around of China. The high sites were mainly located in the economically developed and over populated areas such as the Dongxi Island. The results of source analysis showed that the petroleum spills of marine transport were the dominant PAHs sources in the surface sediments of the coast. The ecological risk assessment indicated that most of the individual PAHs had few negative effects in this area. The concentration of PAHs of Yancheng Coast ranged from 17.07 ng/g to 4426.14 ng/g(mean value 778.75 ng/g),which were really high compared to other coastal zones around of China.PAHs of the atudy area were much larger than that of Lianyungang and Nantong coast. The wetland in this area were more abundant than the other two study area.So PAHs in this area were more polluted. As there are so many rivers in Yancheng, the pollutants in the land were transported to the ecological environment of the coast.More and more structure area in the coast, and that might results in the coast environmental destruction. The ecological risk assessment indicated that acenaphthene and acenaphthylene concentration in some individual sites PAHs had negative effects in this area. The total concentrations of the 16 PAHs in the surface sediments from the Nantong coast ranged from 1.4 ng/g to 87.1 ng/g(mean value 19.9 ng/g),which were generally low compared to the adjacent offshore area and other coastal zones around the world. The selected PAH ratios and the principal components analysis for each site showed that petroleum combustion and petrogenic pollution(mainly caused by petroleum spills)were the dominant PAHs sources in the surface sediments of the coast.Pollutants from the land and the waste gas of the transportation were the main origin of the PAHs.The ecological risk assessment indicated that most of the individual PAHs had few negative effects in this area. The depositional flux of PAHs in Dafeng Harbor of the recent 30 years of Jiangsu Coast indicated that PAHs in sediments related to the land use, population density and economic development.PAHs increased with the population densit y and economic development. There are very little industrial estate in the study area. The landscape fragmentation index was also very low in the study area. The main way of land use was cultivated land, forest land and construction land. There was no large PAHs pollution sources in this area.Marine transportation and low temperature combustion were the main PAHs sources in the study area.To assess the potential of sediments as a new source of contamination to the oceanic environment, the mass inventories of PAHs in the present sampling region were estimated. So PAHs in the sediments could be an important repository of the oceanic pollutants. The treating measures were put forward for protecting the coastal environment, such as utilizing resources of wetlands effectively, new energy utilization and land use refinement and so on.These had provide a useful example for the coastal protection all over the world.
