Because of the approach of the later period of oilfield development, the application of extended reach wells become more and more widely. In the process of drilling, the problems caused by excessive friction torque is particularly outstanding which seriously slow down the drilling efficiency. The drilling process is limited by the expensive cost of rotation steering drilling and large tendency of friction torque which reduce the extension of slipping drilling. Some enterprise of our country innovate the technology of half-rotation steering drilling which synthesized the advantages of slipping drilling and rotation steering drilling. This paper is a detailed study of clutch which is main part of half-rotation steering drilling, and established mechanical model of combination of slipping drilling and rotation steering drilling by taking a successful organized clutch which is a patent as the research object and by mechanics analysis of investigate and survey. In order to prove that this drilling technique is feasible, this paper has also calculated the friction torque and optimized the placement of the clutch by the simulation calculation. It proves that half-rotation steering drilling technique can meet the need of reducing the friction and torque, enhance the drilling efficiency, promote the extension capability of extended reach wells, and reduce the cost by the theoretical research and numerical simulation.
