Rock fracture is the major of disasters which occurred because of tunnel collapse, slope slide and water bursting.Effectively supervising the process of it is extremely important to safe construction and production. It is known that infrared radiation changes with the stress when rock is loading. The sudden change index of the variance of successive minus infrared image and the sudden change index of the stress variation were proposed to study the quantitative relation between stress and infrared radiation of yellow sandstone. The result of this study show,(1)stress variation can reflect stress change when the change is large than 0.1%,and the most change of stress belong to small change;(2)the radios of infrared radiation controlled by stress variation in dry yellow sandstone specimens and damp yellow sandstone specimens were 77% and 85%;(3)Sudden change data of the variance of successive minus infrared image which occurs after stress variation adjustment is two orders of magnitude than the coefficient of stress variation adjustment;(4)this control effect has a characteristic of hysteretic, the average hysteretic time of infrared radiation of dry yellow sandstone specimens and damp yellow sandstone specimens was about 2.7s and 6.0s.The study results can be used to supervise rock fracture and failure process by infrared radiation, and provide basic theory to engineering practice of bridges, tunnels and mines.
