Mussel can not only firmly adhere to the wet rock, the bottom of the ship and some coastal buildings by its foot byssus to resist the strong impact of sea water, but also can adhere to almost all of substrates, including metal, metal oxide, inorganic non-metallic materials, polymer materials and polytetrafluoroethylene. The excellent adhesion properties of the mussel foot byssus enlighten researchers to develop high-strength biomimetic adhesives and other functional materials. In recent years, although there are many published reports on the synthesis of novel mussel-inspired polymers, several drawbacks yet have to be overcome to push such mussel-inspired polymers into practical use: the catechol-contained monomers used as raw material to synthesize the mussel-inspired polymers are generally expensive, such as: dopamine,3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde,etc.;or several steps are used to synthesize the catechol-contained monomers.Aiming at solving the problems mentioned above,we are seeking some inexpensive and simple method to prepare mussel-inspired polymers. In this paper,we reported three kinds of mussel-inspired polymers via a simple synthesis technology, using cheap starting materials and simple and easily controlled synthesis technology, and expanded its application into the adhesive and coating field. The main contents of the study are as follows:(1)By choosing two low-cost,commercially available materials(Polyvinyl alcohol and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid),a mussel-inspired adhesive,PVA-g-DHBA,was synthesized via simple DMAP/DCC-catalyzed esterification reaction and deprotection technology. This bio-inspired adhesive exhibits good bonding ability on metal, glass, plastic and wood.(2)By choosing two low-cost,commercially available materials(Polyvinyl alcohol and 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde),an eco-friendly and easy-to-usemussel-inspired hot curing adhesive,P(VA-g-DBA),was synthesized via a simple acid-catalyzed acetal formation reaction, which exhibited excellent surface adhesion properties.Based on this adhesive property,a coating with excellent adhesion properties, mechanical hardness and high abrasion resistance based on the PVA-based zinc coordinated polymers were prepared. This mussel-inspired coating could continuously release zinc ions at high release rate when immersed into artificial seawater(ASW).(3)By choosing a low-cost,commercially available material,(Polyethyleneimine),a quaternary ammonium salt contained coating was prepared via the Michael addition reaction of amino and catechol and the coprecipitation process of PEI and quaternary ammonium salt contained catechol monomer, which exhibited excellent adhesion properties on glass and plastics substrates and good antibacterial properties.
