After more than two decades of headlong rush to transform China from an autarkic centrally planned economy into a limited open-market economy,China has gradually entered the process of rapid urbanization. And the basic characteristic of urbanization is the expansion of urban built area. One of the many consequences of urbanization is the expansion of cities into rural areas, which leads to the transformation of lands from natural surfaces to developed surfaces. In the process of urbanization, its environmental quality deteriorated, including noise pollution, light pollution, haze and so on.Moreover, the heat island effect is one of the prominent environmental problems facing the city.It is widely considered an established fact that urbanization generally increases heat island effect. The objective of this study is to understand the pattern of urban surface transformation in the city of Nanjing and to find,if any,the correlation between such transformation and the urban heat island effect.Though this study,we can improve our understanding of urbanization, and recognize the relationship between the impervious surfaces and the urban heat islands.Based on the Landsat satellite remote sensing data, this paper studies the general pattern of urban surface transformation and urban heat island changes in the city of Nanjing, and find the correlation between them from 1984 to 2013.Supervised classification is used to identify urban surfaces, while mono-window algorithm to determine urban heat island. In this study, geographic information system is not only utilized to define urban areas and rural areas, but also analyze the change pattern of urderlying surface types and changes of urban heat island quantitatively. The first chapter is an introduction, including background, targets, significances, frame, literature review and etc.The second chapter introduced the research method, including the introduction of data sources, the selection of study area, the process of calculating data, which laid the foundation for following study. The third chapter and the fourth chapter discuss the historical change of the city's underlying surface and the urban heat island effect respectively. The fifth chapter studies the coupling relationship between the the city's underlying surface and the urban heat island effect The sixth chapter summarized the whole thesis and prospected the future. And the seventh chapter is the summary of the graduate professional practice.
