Steel balls are widely used in many different fields,as matter used as bearing component or a rolling object. With the development of science and technology and the improvement of industry, high precise steel ball is applied in mechanical manufacturing, aerospace, medical equipment and many other fields. However, surface defects appear on steel balls during the production process due to the uncertain factors of production process or manual operations. In order to improve quality of the steel balls and industrial level of steel ball production,it is critical to develop steel ball surface detection system with high stability, high efficiency and high accuracy. In this paper,a new LED diffuse reflection dome light source is developed to deal with the high reflection and spherical feature, which is the main difficulty in visual-based inspection.Focus on damage detection of highly reflective surface,a new method was put forward based on integrity analysis of reflected pattern. The method can effectively distinguish the usual defect types of the steel ball surface and satisfy the requirement of high precise steel ball detection. The overall structure and control system of the detection system are designed according to the actual demand of the steel ball manufacturers to develop a steel ball quality detector based on the reflective fringe detection on highly reflective surface.Manufacturer experiments show that the detection rate is 4 per second for the steel balls with 1.588 mm diameter. The false acceptance rate is only 0.014% in manual redetections with microscope to the qualified balls chosen by the detector, which satisfies the detection to the high precise steel balls in industrial production.
