As matrix materials,epoxy resin(EP)plays an important role in composites,which has inherent advantages such as low density,high resistance to corrosion,excellent electrochemical and mechanical properties,so they play an important key on the composite materials.And they are widely used in aerospace,military science and other fields.However,EP has the low limit oxygen index,which makes them easily burned.In addition,EP is always burning for a long time and releases lots of smoke.To increase the ability of composites to reduce the fire hazard,flame retardancy of EP has attracted more and more attentions in recent years especially in aerospace and military science areas.That's because they urgently need non-toxic and environmental flame retardancy.In this paper,EP works as matrix materials,aluminum tri-hydroxide(ATH)and hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene(HPCTP)was selected as flame retardant.The composite materials were synthesized by a heat curing method with the raw materials.An oxygen index meter,UL-94 vertical horizontal combustion apparatus,a thermogravimetric(TG)analyzer,a cone calorimeter,smoke density box,scanning electron microscope(SEM)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)were used to analyze the flame retardancy,thermal properties,force properties and micromechanism of the synthesized materials.Then we can analyze their characteristics and find out the best addition rate and way.The results showed that although EP doped with ATH is effective on retarding flame and suppressing smoke,its mechanical properties becomes worse with increment of ATH that deserves to be resolved.HPCTP addition can improve retarding flame and mechanical properties of EP,but they release lots of smoke.When EP,ATH and HPCTP were added together as the rate of 100:7.5:7.5,all the properties of the materials are better.In addition,the results of LOI and the horizontal combustion indicate that EP,ATH and HPCTP(100:5:10)have the best flame retardancy.The TG measurements demonstrated that EP,ATH and HPCTP(100:10:5)have the most superior thermal properties.The data of cone calorimeter showed that when the addition rate of EP,ATH and HPCTP was 100:10:5,and the materials have the highest heat release rate and the lowest smoke release rate,and the materials have the lowest heat release total and the minimal smoke release total.Moreover,the rate of EP,ATH and HPCTP was 100:5:10,and the material has the optimum tensile strength.
