In nature we can often discover a variety of vivid colors,like that of a butterfly wings,insect elytra,mandrill facial or parrot feathers,all showing characteristics of high brightness and high saturation different from that made by ordinary pigments.It's not necessary to introduce auxochrome groups to achieve this unique biological phenomenon producing colors.It is a physical effect of producing color,which arises from interference,diffraction,or scattering of light by micro-or nanostructures with the scale of light wavelength.Distinct from deterioration and degradation of pigment,structural color is promising to improve the fade phenomenon and to avoid the environmental contamination caused by the dyeing process owing to the absence of pigment or dye.Photonic crystals and amorphous photonic crystal are the main source to produce structural color.Photonic crystal structure is formed by periodic spatial arrangement of different refractive index medium.As the periodic structure applies to the principle of Prague,strong angle-dependent color will be produced,which is defined as iridescence color and greatly limites its applications in textile field.Amorphous photonic structure doesn't have complete photonic band gap,but it has a special defect structure with short-range order,in which only isotropic photonic band gap will be formed by the photon of multiple scattering.The colors don't change over the angle of incident light defined as non-iridescence.The angle-independent color is significantin textile,dyeing,imaging fields.Therefore,studying on amorphous photonic structure will have great influence on manufacturing industry in the futureIn order to develop an efficient functional and non-iridescent fiber/fabric dyeing technology to realize industrial production,my study focuses on fast coloring effect,optical properties and functionality of amorphous photonic structure on the fibers and fabrics,with the following content:(1)Facile and fast fabrication of structural color fiber by continuous surface coating technique: In order to prepare the vivid structural color fiber fast and largely,we design a continuous coating system for continuous preparation of structural color fiber.PS microspheres were applied as main content of coating pigment,and fiber with different color could be realized by tuning the size of the nanoparticles or the velocity of coating.Transition between amorphous photonic structure and photonic crystal structure also can be regulated by the velocity of coating.The coating technology producing angle-independent color can adapt to all types of fibers,so it has great potential in practical production.(2)Preparation of structural color fibers with amorphous structure through polymer phase separation: Biconnected porous structure fibers with structural color were fabricated rapidly by phase separation of electrospinning technology,which simulated amorphous photonic structure in nature.The optical properties of amorphous structural color fiber were investigated by changing the parameters during electrospinning process.The saturability and lightness of structural color fibers were also regulated by the amount of incorporated carbon black.The study provided experimental basis for large-scale preparation offibers with high saturated angle-independent color.(3)Rapid fabrication of robust,washable,self-healing superhydrophobic fabrics with non-iridescent structural color by spray coating: Functional fabrics with non-iridescence structural color were prepared by spray coating technique with the mixed dye: polyacrylate adhesive,P(St-MMA-AA)colloidal microspheres,and carbon black.The color of the coated fabrics could be tuned over the visible spectrum by just varying the size of the microspheres.The method was effective to enhance the fastness of the structural color on fabrics,and endowed the fabrics with washability,abrasive resistance and stable super-hydrophobicity.The coated fabrics could restore its super liquid-repellent property by a short-time heating treatment after being damaged.It is convinced that the novel dyeing technique on fabrics based on structural color is promising to prepare functional textiles and revolutionize the fashion industries in view.
