Ionic liquids are widely studied in aluminum electrolysis due to their unique chemical and physical properties. This method as a low energy consumption and environmentally friendly process shows a good application prospect for aluminum electrowinning and electrofining. In this paper, electrodeposition of aluminum in AlCl3-1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride?AlCl3-BMIC?ionic liquid electrolyte was also studied?1?To inhibit the dendrite formation for aluminum electrodeposition in room-temperature ionic liquid electrolyte,a promising method for electrodeposition of non-dendritic aluminum foils on carbon cathodes is investigated. The effect of current density, deposition time, temperature, and cathode materials on the deposit morphology of aluminum foils in AlCl3-1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride?AlCl3-BMIC?ionic liquid electrolyte was also studied. The prepared aluminum foils are compact, bright and easily to peel off from the carbon electrodes after electrodeposition. The experimental results show that the high current density and low electrowinning temperature is responsible for the compactness of aluminum foils. The intensity of the?200?plane enhances with the increase of current density.Cathodic current efficiencies of the electrodeposition process are from 79%to 87%.The mechanisms of electrodeposition of non-dendritic aluminum foils in ionic liquids are proposed.?2?A template-free electrochemical deposition method for spherical-like A1 particle in the Lewis acidic 66.7-33.3 m/o aluminum chloride-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid?IL?was reported in this work.Effects of variations in current density and deposition time, temperature on surface morphology were studied, and crystal orientations of the particles were also gained. Results showed that Al particle displayed uniform spherical-like with the diameter range was 5-40?m.The particle size of deposition decreased obviously with increasing current density with the same deposition charge. It was indicated that the electrodeposits exhibited a strong preferred?111?crystal orientation.EDX detection showed that the contents of the deposition were aluminum at 94.21 wt.%.The highest current efficiency reached at about 94%.
