Electromagnetic metamaterials(EMMs)refers to a class of equivalent homogeneous artificial composite material which are periodically arranged and assembled by sub-wavelength microstructural units.It has abnormal physical properties that are not possessed by natural materials.The artificial material has the unusual physical properties which are not possessed by natural media.This paper mainly uses this idea to combine the new electromagnetic metamaterials with the microstrip antenna,three wideband directiona microstrip antennas based on metamaterials are designed and fabricated.In this paper,the internal mechanism of the designed metamaterials microstrip antenna,the current distribution diagram of the antennas and the design process of the parameters are analyzed in detail.The designed metamaterials microstrip antenna improves the performance of the initial antenna(for example: broadening the bandwidth of the initial antenna and increasing the gain).This paper is mainly divided into two parts: the first part is the design of he broadband directional microstrip antenna based on the metamaterial,and the second part is the fabrication and testing of the metamaterial microstrip antenna.The main framework of this paper is as follows:The first two chapters of the paper mainly describe the application of metamaterial in the antenna and the basic theory of metamaterial and microstrip antenna.The third chapter designed three kinds of broadband directional microstrip antenna based on metamaterials,the bandwidth of the designed antenna is broadened by etching the planar microstructure on the radiation patch.In the same way,by etching the cross gaps on the ground plane of the designed antenna,it not only broadens the bandwidth of the designed antenna,but also reduces the coupling of the ground plane and the central area of the radiation patch,and enhances the end-fire of the designed antenna.which makes the main radiation direction of the designed antenna is horizontal-x direction rather than the vertical direction of the traditional microstrip antenna.Secondly,the internal working mechanism and simulation optimization process of the metamaterial antenna are analyzed in detail.In the fourth chapter,three metamaterial microstrip antennas are processed,and the parameters of the fabricated antennas are tested and analyzed,such as return loss,gain and two-dimensional plane direction.
