Calcium alumino-titanate,as the slag product in the smelting process of the ferrotitanium alloys,was distinguished for its large output,excellent wear resistance,small thermal conductivity and refractoriness(>1790℃)with high Al2O3 content,thus displaying the high recycling value.In this study,the microstructure,physical and chemical properties of calcium alumino-titanate and its hollow balls were investigated by putting calcium alumino-titanate into ladle permanent layer,Al2O3-SiC-C brick of torpedo ladle and Iron groove castable.And the drawn conclusions are as follows:(1)Calcium alumino-titanate particles exhibited flake layers or ladder shaped after high temperature treatment.The hollow balls exhibiting six-party sheets,arranged into hollowed skeleton randomly.There was no difference between the particles and the hollow balls in the composition.(2)Calcium alumino-titanate was proved to be the ideal material replacing all bauxite in steel ladle permanent layer castable through experimental research and field use.It has better construction effect,performance,insulation effect than bauxite material.The cold compressive strength of the samples increased while the rupture strength decreased with calcium alumino-titanate hollow ball replacing its granules.Besides,the water content decreased and the construction performance becomed better.The thermal insulation effect of hollow ball was not very different from that of calcium alumino-titanate granule.(3)The oxidation resistance of samples was improved,and its thermal shock resistance and slag resistance were reduced slightly with calcium alumino-titanate granule replacing bauxite granule in Al2O3-SiC-C brick of torpedo ladle.(4)The oxidation resistance of samples declined with calcium alumino-titanate replacing brown fused alumina.The oxidation resistance has declined dramatically when the content of calcium alumino-titanate reached more than 60wt%,however,the oxidation resistance of the sample showed no significant change when the content of calcium alumino-titanate less than 60wt%.
