The Study Of Contemporary Western Musical’s Costumes

Since the birth of musicals,they have gained strong momentum in a widely accepted manner to grow into an art form of vulgarization,popularization and entertainment.As an essential part of musical performance,costumes play a key role in revealing the background,developing the plot and shaping the characters.On the stage,fanciful clothing and exquisite makeup will leave a deep impression on the audience.However,clothing cannot work alone.It needs to coordinate with various departments and multifarious factors to yield gorgeous stage effect.This tentative study is grounded in the clothing of musicals staged in West End of London.First,it traces the development of contemporary West End musicals and their costumes,analyzes their distinct features and discusses the reasons for the transformation of clothing.Then,it generalizes the relationship between clothing and other elements,including those regarding musicals,design and person characters.It also combines relative pictures to make an objective comment on the clothing of West End Musicals,in an endeavor to seek a perfect combination of clothing and stage art.Finally,it combines the status of Chinese musical clothing,puts forward three suggestions,hopes to shed light on the future advancement of clothing of Chinese musicals.
