As a part of road infrastructures, taxi stations are important nodes of thetransportation system. However, travel demand of taxi customers were considered littlewhen setting taxi stations. In this research, taxi operation characteristics were analysedthrough GPS data, and the method of setting taxi stations combined GIS and AHP wereproposed, then an optimization model based on maximal covering location problemwere constructed, and an example was used to display the decision process. The general principles of setting taxi stations were proposed based on experience. Then the factors of setting taxi stations were evaluated, and the recommended standardof setting taxi stations were analyzed. Meanwhile, this paper presented a methodologyfor the process of setting taxi stations. In this research, taxi GPS data was used to analyse taxi operation characteristics.Based on the analysis of taxi operation characteristics, the difference of taxi operationcharacteristics with the change of time and areas were analysed. The hot-periods oftravel demand of taxi customers were found by statistical method, and there aredifference between peak time and hot-periods. Kernel density analysis was used toanalyse hot-spots of travel demand of taxi customers between different periods in studyarea. Taxi operation characteristics based on travel demand can be used to study thelocation problem.A methodology for the process of setting taxi stations combined GIS and AHP wasproposed. The factors of setting taxi stations were analysed based on a hierarchy model. An optimization model based on maximal covering location problem was constructed, which can satisfy the maximal travel demand.
