The rapid development of highway needs a huge amount of high-quality asphalt which currently mostly made from oil refining, which is a non-renewable resource. Bioasphalt not only solves environmental problems caused by the disposal of a lot of solid waste from municipal, agriculture and forestry, but also is environmental friendly and economic compared with traditional asphalt. Therefore, there is unpredictable economic and social value to study the application technology of bioasphalt. Currently, the application of bioasphalt is in the preliminary research stage, which has no effective and systematic application technology. It is essential to carry out a systematic study of bioasphalt and put forward feasible ways of application.Firstly, composition characteristics of bioasphalt were obtained utilizing elemental analysis, FT-IR and GC-MS. Bioasphalt's SARA fractions and solubility were compared with base petroleum asphalt, which would provide the principle for bioasphalt modifcation.Secondly, basic performance tests were conducted to obtain bioasphalt and base asphalt's construction temperature and temperature sensitivity, so were the road performance differences between bioasphalt and petroleum asphalt. And this can determine applied ways of bioasphalt and provide modification direction.Thirdly, based on the bioasphalt's composition, performance characteristics and compatibility principles, blend technology of bioasphalt and petroleum asphalt were studied and optimal content of bioasphalt was got. Modification technology and amount of modification additives were selected by performance changing and the compatibility. Compatibilities of blend and modification were evaluated on the basic of morphology and storage stability. Additionly, by means of FT-IR, blend and modification mechanism among bioasphalt, petroleum asphalt and modified additives were studied.Finally, rheological properties of the mixed bioasphalt and modified mixed bioasphalt were got based on the principles of rheology by DSR and BBR. High temperature stability and low temperature cracking resistance of them were evaluated. With a variety of road performance test methods, performances of mixed bioasphalt and modified mixed bioasphalt were compared with petroleum asphalt, and the differences were obtained. Road performances of asphalt mixtures with mixed bioasphalt and modified mixed bioasphalt were got by lab tests, so were the asphalt mixtures with petroleum asphalt and nomoral modified asphalt. Performance defect of asphalt mixtures with mixed bioasphalt and modified mixed bioasphalt was found, which was tried to resolved preliminary with technical measures later.It attempts to replace petroleum asphalt used in asphalt pavement engineering partially with bioasphalt in this paper. Though various road performances get improvd with bioasphalt mixed in petroleum asphalt, some defects are introducd. Overall, application of bioasphalt is feasible with broad prospect. Research in the future should pay attention to analyse adaptability of bioasphalt from different sources and explore improved mesurements to reduce non-essential defects, so the economic benefits will be greatly increased.
