A new kind of lateral resisting system, named concrete-filled square steel tubularframe-thin steel plate shear walls with single side openings (CSF-SPWO) is introduced,and comprehensive theory and finite element analyses of CSF-SPWO are carried out.The purpose of this study is to reveal the hysteretic behavior of CSF-SPWO undercyclic loads. The main research contents and corresponding conclusions are listed asfollows:(1) Both the skeleton curves and the hysteresis curves have been obtained fromthe hysteretic performance analyses with varying parameters. The bearing capacity, thehysteresis loop back area, the coefficient of energy dissipation and the lateral stiffnessof CSF-SPWO are studied. The results show that the section type of column, the ratioof height to thickness of steel plate, the rate of openings and the column bendingstiffness significantly affect the hysteretic performance while the influence of the axialcompression ratio on the hysteretic performance is very small.(2) Structural measures of column stiffening for CSF-SPWO are studied.Comparative analyses of the effect of the T-shaped steel stiffening and the fullpenetration type stiffening on the hysteretic behavior are performed. The results showthat setting stiffening can enhance the constraints of steel tube on concrete and theability of energy dissipation, and improve the column wall stress.(3) Structural measures for steel plate shear walls with openings are studied.Comparative analyses of four stiffening ways are carried out and the design method of stiffening rib are put forward. The results show that the hysteretic performance of CSF–SPWO is the best when stiffening members have hinged connections. The results offormula are consistent with the results of the finite element calculation.(4) The theoretical calculation of bearing capacity, the shear formula for the beamand the equivalent calculation method of CSF-SPWO are studied. The results showthat the formulas of horizontal bearing capacity and shear are consistent with theresults of the finite element calculation. The CSF-SPWO equivalent calculationmethod can greatly simplify the design process, and lay the foundation for the use ofresearch results about the steel plate walls without openings into CSF–SPWO.
