With the rapid developm ent of society and economy, people endless demand for energy and chemical products, this is bound to finite fossil fuels for lar ge-scale development and utilization and fossil fuel will be consumed, which raises concerns about wind energy. Small direct drive pe rmanent magnet generator(DDPMG) as a wind power generation, which ha s simple structure, low cost, reliable, flexible installation, etc, and ha s potential useful in rem ote farming, silos and other areas. However, irreversible demagnetization and starting moment resistance(SMR) affect its widespread prom otion and using. Ther efore, it is importan t to study of small DDPMG for improve the utilization of wind energy. The following several aspects were studied in this paper:Firstly, the three rotor generator topologies for comparison analysis and choose the radial surface mount type structure for the study, according to the conventional PMSG calculation method to calculate the basic par ameters and simulation with RMxprt software;Secondly, For problem that DDPMG may arise irreversible demagnetization in case of fail ure, three-phase symmetrical short circuit, two-phase and single-phas e short circuit is shorted to ground electrical fault condit ions simulated and results show that the three phase short circuit fault is most damaging, however, if removal of fault timely, permanent magnet material cannot be demagnetized. Finally, weaken cogging torque can effectively reduce SMR of DDPMG, the paper focusing on the pole shifting method to diminish cogging torque, theoretical calculation and sim ulation result show that the magnetic pole sh ifting method to weaken the permanent magnet generator cogging torque has significant results.
