UHV AC transmission has characteristic of large capacity?long conveying distance?Low line loss?less occupied area relatively. So it is extremely important meaning for the development of the power grid?the fundamental guarantee for The continuing growth of electricity demand?the only road lead to the sustainable development of power industry. Judging from operational data of EHV/UHV transmission line in USSR and experience, the major cause of EHV/UHV transmission line tripping is lightning stroke. UHV AC transmission line located in the desert?mountainous area, with strong lightning activity, face severe challenges of lightning trouble?ice coating and contamination. So On the basis of summarizing the existing operating experience, doing a good job in lightning protection design to ensure safe and reliable operation of power grid is vital to development of power industry. Influencing factors for lightning shielding failure is analyzed by EGM model in chapter two; UHV AC transmission line simulation model is built by ATP –EMTP(some kind of electro –magnetic transient simulation software in chapter three). And in order to improve the simulation accuracy this simulation model not only has considered the impulsive corona but also has considered coupling e ffect of impuls ive corona; The advantages and disadvantages of the six kind of tower which include four kind of first founded tower and two kind tower of trial project has been analyzed in chapter four with the method in chapter two and three; The traditional lightning protection measures and variant lightning protection measures has been introduced in chapter five. And in order to be technical and economical in lightning protection of UHV AC transmission line, nichetargeting lightning protection measures has been considered in this chapter.
