The leakage characteristic while water flows radially in the annular clearance has great importance on the lubricating property of a friction pair and influences the performance of water hydraulic components. Taken the water hydraulic annular clearance as the research object in the paper, the way combined with theory and experiment was used to explore the leakage characteristics and lay the foundation of the design for the water hydraulic components.Firstly, based on the assumption of laminar flow, the equation of the flowrate and the distribution of pressure were deduced while water flows in the rotated annular clearance under the pressure effect and centrifugal action. Then the flow field was simulated by using the laminar and turbulent model separately. The feathers of the flow field and the leakage characteristic were obtained with the visualization analysis based on the simulation results. Then according to the common working conditions of the port plate pair in a water hydraulic pump, factors and level were chosen to arrange the sheet of the orthogonal test for the leakage characteristics of water hydraulic annular clearance. And the system was built. At last, the result was analyzed to investigate the leakage characteristics and compared with the result of simulation and calculation.The conclusion was drawn from the comparison between the experiment and the simulation results that when the height of the clearance and the pressure among the gap increase to a certain extent, the experiment results differs a lot from the simulation and the calculation results. It's suggested that the flow condition changes while the clearance height and the pressure increase. After the analysis of the results of the orthogonal test, it turns out that the height has the most important influence on the leakage flowrate, and then arranges the pressure and the width of the annular clearance. Besides thorough the test of the height changing, it's suggested that when the height of the clearance increase to a certain extent, the radial flow in the annular clearance is unstable and the water support is destroyed.
