In recent years, with the development of permanent magnet material, permanent magnet machines are widely used in civil and industrial, and the research on the design of permanent magnet machines is also developing and deeply. According to the different location of permanent magnet on rotor, permanent magnet mahines can be roughly divided into surface permanent magnet(SPM) and interior permanent magnet(IPM) machines. IPM synchronous machines are widely used in the traction, and the rise of new energy in the electric vehicle in recent years adopt IPM machines.This paper includes the theoretical analysis and optimal design of IPM machines, and also the summary of prototype test. The theoretical analysis part mainly include the winding function of stator magnetomotive force, and the influence of motor slot opening on air gap permeance. Then, the analysis part gives out the stator magnetomotive force and air gap permeance of the prototype model. The paper proposes a modified IPM machines analytical modeling based on the magnetic potential method, and the modified modeling can effectively slove out the air gap field distribution. In the optimization design part, first of all, it gives the design requirements of the drive motor of electric vehicle. Then, the motor design process is introduced, and gives the specific motor optimization design of main dimensions and detail dimensions. The last part of the prototype test introduces the prototype test platform structure. And according to the national standard of the electric vehicles test requirements, the paper gives the relevant test data and analyzes and summarises test results.By comparing of the modified modeling and finite element and prototype tese results, it can be seen that the modified analytical modeling can be efficiently used in the analysis and design of IPM machines, and sloves out the air gap field distribution. And it can be seen that the prototype meets the requirement of the motor design from the test results.
