Friction and wear are widespread in industrial production, and seriously affect the reliability and service life of the mechanical parts, causing a lot of energy and material waste. Rough surface morphology characteristics and its contact characteristics are the primary cause of friction and wear. So,it is necessary to objectively and accurately characterize rough surface and study its mechanism of contact and friction.Based on fractal theory, a two-dimensional rough profile and a 3D fractal surface are established, respectively. The influence of fractal dimension and scale factor on the surface morphology is studied. Different fractal models are established to study the corresponding relation between fractal dimension, scale factor and surface roughness.Using the finite element analysis software ANSYS, a finite element model of rough surface contacting with smooth surface is established. Contact characteristics of rough surface and smooth surface are studied respectively under the distribution loading and displacement loading. Variation rules of real contact and wear area, contact stress, max deformation with different loadings are analyzed. The influence of fractal parameters on rough surface roughness is studied, coming to the conclusion that under the same loading, the bigger the fractal dimension, the bigger the contact area; the bigger scale factor, the smaller the contact area.A finite element medel of the contact friction between two rough surfaces is established. The variation rules of real contact area, the maximum contact stress and plastic deformation area, wear area in the process of contact under different loadings are analyzed, which explains the mechanism of friction and wear for rough surface and rough surface contact.
