Ecological destruction and environmental problems caused by rapid urbanization are discussed in the perspective of land ethics. Taking American Greenways as experience, this paper explores the impact of Leopold's Land Ethic Ideas on modern ecological design, and attempts to.use greenways to solve environmental problems associated with urbanization. In this paper, environmental problems are presented so as to indicate urgent need for the establishment of harmonious man-land relationship. Then the background and development of land ethics are briefly reviewed in historical timeline way, which is innovation point of writing. In the next section, the content and meaning of land ethics in A Sand County Almanac are intensively studied to demonstrate that land ethics are suitable to conduct ecological design in China. The third part of the paper analyzes the intension of ecological greenway, summarizes the design method and principle of ecological greenway, and elaborates ecological ethics contains in greenway design. In order to prove positive impact of land ethics on greenway design and ecological environment restoration, the greenway projects investigated in Taiwan and Wuhan are introduced, also advantages and disadvantages accumulated in our practice stage of greenway design are analyzed. Then, assessment of ecological greenway design is summarized. Finally, the dialectical relationship between land ethics and greenway design is reviewed. From the long-term development perspective, the ecological design need to be advocated to achieve the ideal of ecological urbanization.
