With the constant expanding of sustainable development and the increasing of urban population density, people put forward higher requirements for the current urban construction and engineering construction. That is to say,it is necessary to reduce the occupation of urban space in the maximum extent, try to avoid damage to the ecological environment and improve the recycling rate of resources in engineering construction. It is requisite to minimize the interference to the existing traffic of the city, specific to the bridge engineering. All of these demands promote the application and development of assembly technology in the construction of bridges. In recent years, precast structures had been widely used in bridge engineering, but its application mainly concentrated in the bridge superstructure, while precast bridge pier technology was limited application in domestic construction and the scope of its application is limited. One of the main reasons that influences the popularization and using of the precast bridge piers is the lack of systematic understanding of their seismic performance and there is no code to follow in their seismic design.Ensuring the reliability of the connection between the pier and the cap or assembly segments of the precast bridge piers is the most critical issue to the study of its seismic performance. Based on the actual project, one set of specimens with cast-in-site type and two sets of specimens with precast type were designed to study on the failure mechanism of precast bridge piers and discuss the effect on seismic performance with different connection between the pier and the cap by pseudo-static tests and the research results could provide reference for the engineering application of the precast bridge piers and the preparation of the relevant specifications. This paper conducted the following research works and drew the corresponding conclusions:(1) The research purpose, research contents, research methods and technology roadmap was proposed according to summarizing the relevant research and application of the precast bridge piers.(2) Manufacturing process of three sets of bridge piers, damage development of the specimens during the tests and the final failure of pier columns was introduced in this paper.(3) Through the analysis of the test data, the seismic performance of different connection types was evaluated from bearing capacity, the displacement ductility, the residual displacement and the accumulated energy.(4) Finite element models were established based on ABAQUS to simulate process of pseudo-static test. Simulation results and experimental results were compared and analyzed to verify their correctness;(5) According to the analysis of test data obtained by external displacement gauge and strain gauge, moment-curvature relationship of section of plastic hinge at the bottom of the pier was researched and the curve of lateral displacement of pier columns under different displacement on the pier top was plotted.
