Distribution network is the end of the power system, directly connecting with the electric equipment.The operation of distribution network directly affects the power users.With the increase of the capacity of the distribution network,the problem of lack of reactive power exists in the distribution network for a long time.Reactive power compensation in power distribution network is the necessary condition to reduce active power loss, improve voltage level, improve power factor, improve power supply efficiency, and ensure safe and reliable operation of power system.For the moment, with the increase of load distribution network, reactive power fluctuations in the system will have a greater impact on the voltage level and power factor of the distribution network, which seriously threaten the quality of power supply. Therefore, in order to meet the growing demand for reactive power, it is necessary to compensate the reactive power in the distribution network.This paper first introduces several measures for reactive power compensation. After analysis and comparison, it is concluded that the shunt capacitor is the main stream in reactive power compensation.And the problem of the shunt capacitor’s switching device has been plagued by the application of capacitor in reactive power compensation.At present, the most wide use of the switch is a mechanical switch of AC contactor and thyristor switch.This paper analyzes the contact switch and the thyristor switch the advantages and disadvantages in switching the parallel capacitor,then combining the advantages of AC contactor and crystal gate pipe type switching switch, introduce a novel capacitor switch--composite switch.The composite switch combines the advantages of both, and avoids the problems caused by the traditional switch.At the end, the low voltage reactive power compensation device DJHK based on the principle of composite switch is introduced in the paper,which has the advantages of high precision compensation, compensating quickly, to achieve the dynamic compensation, and through the example to validate its performance,thus compared with the traditional switch, the use of the composite switch in the reactive power compensation of distribution network has a good reactive power compensation effect.The application of reactive power compensation device in the distribution network will improve the operation, the power quality of the distribution network, and maintain its stable and reliable operation.
