With the rapid development of modern science and technology, competition in military domain becomes increasingly important. At mean time, the requirement of concealed weapons and requirements becomes higher than ever. Because the stealth capability and penetration capability were greatly improved due to the passive model without emitting energy, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or missile onboard infrared detection system becomes one of the hot points. But limited by its lack of distance estimation, the advanced guidance laws can not be applied, which prevent it from developing. So, enhancing the distance estimation is one of the key technologies in electro-optic countermeasure systems.Based on the review of basic theories and research status of the targeting, this paper describes the methods commonly used in passive targeting and proposes the ideas of the passive infrared targeting for the 40-80km targets. First, it introduces the passive targeting for an air moving observer. Through establishing the motion model of the three-dimensional space observer and long-range targets, the mathematical analysis is used to build a quadratic equation of the distance of the infrared small targets. The estimated distance of the targets is obtained by solving the above equation. Next we introduced an algorithm of the infrared passive targeting for the ground stationary observer. Through establishing the passive ranging model of the long-range infrared targets for the ground-based observatories, a ternary nonlinear equations containing the targets distance information is established. In order to overcome the sensitivity to the initial values of the conventional nonlinear equations iterative solution process and that its solution is not unique, a passive ranging scheme based on genetic algorithm and particle filter was proposed. Simulations show that the positioning algorithm has good tracking results.
