Automobile Design Style Research Based On Styling Surface Features

With the development of automotive production material and manufacture technology, automobile styling entered a diversified era which various automobile design styles coexist. Meanwhile, under the circumstance of new energy vehicles and smart vehicles, there are new directions for automobile design styles. How to grasp automobile design styles, how to create automobile brand DNAs and what surface features do different styles have are becoming urgent problems.This paper takes automobile design style as the study object, researched and analyzed current automobile styles from the perspective of automobile surface features. Based on the study of automobile design, elaborated the basic concepts of automobile design styles, analyzed the relationship between form feature and automobile design style. The structure, function and composition of automobile design style is put forward. According to the features contained by automobile design style, combining with the cognitive process of automobile design style, the properties of automobile design style is put forward and the theoretical basis of style clustering is provided. By analyzing the history of automobile styles, the influencing factors of automobile design style is put forward, pointed out the necessary of automobile design style study based on styling surface.The basic concepts of automobile styling surface are explained. The meaning of styling surface is put forward. Pointed out 2 perspectives of styling surface classification and discussed their characteristics. The key attributes of styling surface and their data forms is researched and the theoretical basis of style characterization is provided.It extracted key attributes of characteristic surfaces in automobile design by automobile design case analyzing and digital modeling, cluster analyzed automobile design styles based on similarity of automobile styles.4 automobile design styles named as hard-edged, sculptured, sharp-carved and round is proposed and characterized by styling surface features. Combining with the historical models and concept models, proposed the trend of automobile design styles.The hard-edged style and sharp-carved style is applied in an automobile design practice aiming at different consumer groups. The theoretical feasibility was preliminary verified.In this paper, a method on classifying automobile design styles is put forward based on styling surface features and the trend of automobile design styles is proposed. This research is of great significance for automobile design.
