In recent years, water pollution incidents occurred frequently, which has given rise to the potential threaten to the safety of drinking water.Fast detection and emergency treatment of accidental leakage of pollutants are significant for supplying safe drinking water.3D fluorescence spectroscopy is one of the recently developed detection methods for organic matter in water. It is a simple, environmentally friendly analytical techniques with low time consumption, high sensitivity and zero consumption of reagent during the whole measuring process.3D fluorescence spectroscopy can obtain fluorescence intensity when excitation and emission wavelengths changes simultaneously, showing more information and more apparent fluorescence characteristics than traditional spectroscopy. Each of the solution of 53 kinds of the organic matter in standards for drinking water quality was scanned by fluorospectrophotometer and it was discovered that 18 of them had fluorescence features.Within a certain range of concentrations, the value of the fluorescence characteristic peak and concentration showed a strong linear relation with the correlation coefficient r~2 is greater than 0.9,thus fluorescence can be used for quantitative analysis. It would be convenient to determine the concentration of certain fluorescent matter and degree of pollution using 3D fluorescence spectroscopy. The tap water of a city was continuously monitored for quite a long time by a fluorospectrophotometer.Parallel Factors(PARAFAC)algorithm was used to analyze the data and spectra. The fluorescence peaks of protein-like and humic-like were both in a stable state. The sudden change and rise of fluorescence peak of protein-like were probably caused by influx of some fluorescent organic pollutants into the raw water;the variation of the fluorescence peak of humic-like was probably related to the climate change.3D fluorescence can detect the sudden pollution in city water timely and reliably, which was verified by a simulated water pollution of the leakage of ethylbenzene.A database of 3D fluorescent spectra of surface water was established by collecting and analyzing the 3D fluorescence features of drinking water samples from different regions.Based on the evaluating system which was set by MATLAB,water quality can be reflected more clearly by way of rating.3D fluorometry was used to analysis the content of styrene and xylene, given by which tap water was contaminated. It was proved that powdered activated carbon(PAC)has the ability to absorb the fluorescent matters in water with high efficiency. When the concentration of organic matter in the water reaches the limits in standards of drinking water quality,PAC(180 mesh)had a good removal effect of them, the removal rate was more than 95%.
