The modernization of instruments and equipments is being developed faster and faster, with more and more functions. And their intelligent level is being developed to a higher level. In order to keep these instruments work in a long-term stable condition, a planned and efficient measurement and calibration task for the instruments with a reliability of traceability of these works is asked; which is an urgent and difficult task operator for measurement and calibration are facing. When the operator for measurement and calibration are doing a calibration, they usually use a traditional method with manual measuring, and have to look up a lot of information for each kind of instrument, even every specification. The method spends a lot of time and energy, and makes errors easily. So the development of the automatic calibration system for programmable control instruments has the important value of engineering application.This subject based on the particular research and analysis on the situation of the automatic calibration system development and the actual situation. It comes up with a technical proposal, which takes the automatic calibration with the digital multimeter for example, researched to use VB6.0 language to achieve computer program control, selected USB-GPIB port as the system hardware technical proposal and took Agilent VISA as the system software technical proposal. The automatic calibration for a digital multimeter with GPIB port can achieved.When the automatic calibration system is accomplished, it can measure each data automatically, accurately, and efficiently. Meanwhile, it can automatically make calibration certificate, and then displays data or prints them out directly; which is unmatched compared with the traditional method. The method effectively guarantees calibration quantity, and improves work efficiency. It has higher starting point and better prospect, has driving effect to the automatic calibration for other instruments. And it provides a good technical foundation.
