In recent years, as more and more cascaded hydropower bases, such as the three Gorges river basin, Lancang river basin, Yuanjiang river basin and so on, have been built in inland waterways of China, corresponding automatic scheduling system should be designed for the cascaded hydropower stations to improve the level of automation and economic operation. As an important part of the reservoir operation automatic system, the cascaded reservoir optimization scheduling system provides indispensable decision support for reservoir operation. Instead of optimization scheduling for a single reservoir, the co-scheduling of the cascaded reservoirs can achieve maximum benefit from the scheduling point of view. As more and more co-scheduling of the cascaded reservoirs, we urgent need to design corresponding cascade reservoir optimization scheduling system.The cascaded reservoir optimal scheduling system is a software system which centers on the reservoir optimal scheduling decision and connects the information management and hydrological forecasting as a whole. The realization of the system involves the theories and techniques in more than one subject. This paper mainly focuses on designing the optimal scheduling system for the cascaded reservoirs.In this paper, we have reviewed the researches related to the reservoir automatic scheduling systems and analyzed their background as well as the functions. Based on the analysis of the advantages and drawbacks of the reservoir optimal scheduling systems at the present stage, we determined the functions of our system and the B/S based pattern of system realization. On the aspect of function design, we consider the design code of the reservoir operation system in China and present four modules in our system, which includes information management, mid-term and long-term runoff forecast, cascaded reservoir generation scheduling and report printing module. Meanwhile, we determine the multi-chart, multi-data and good interaction feature of the system function on basis of the analysis of the reservoir scheduling problem.Secondly, this paper has discussed the key technologies based on the Java EE development architecture and its application on reservoir optimal scheduling problem. In the server-side, we obey the concept of highly cohesive and low coupling and uses the SSH integration framework as well as the MVC design pattern to improve the development efficiency and system maintainability. In the browser-side, the jQuery, jQuery UI and jQuery plugin are connected, which not only improves the interactivity of the system but also makes the user interface more attractive. Meanwhile, the light data communication pattern of AJAX + JSON provides guarantees for huge data transfer. Furthermore, the introduction of JNI technology solves the time efficiency of the reservoir scheduling algorithms in the system.Finally, we realize the B/S based cascaded reservoir optimal scheduling system and displays the typical user interface of system. The system uses hierarchical modular development, which has strong scalability and maintainability. What‘s more, the clear user interface structure and friendly operation prompt provides a variety of convenient functions for operators. For example, the Excel based reservoir data edit function and curve-drag based reservoir data modification function. All of these help to improve the efficiency of hydropower optimization scheduling and provide guarantees for economic operation in hydropower Station.
