The airport is the main infrastructure for the development of China's aviation industry, but due to increasing movements and large aircrafts application, it has led to serious airport pavement damages for bearing capacity decline, life shortening and other issues. The overlay technology, i.e., paveing asphalt concrete on cement concrete pavement, is the most common way to extend the rigid runway life in China.After it paves on overlay, rigid pavement often need overlay twice and even more with time going and performance fading. Currently, due to lack of studies on multi-layers composite pavement at home and abroad, it is urgent to improve the relevant pavement design and evaluation.Taken Hongqiao east runway for example, pavement damage levels and causes are analyzed and selected as main design indicators(crack and rut) from a survey of existing pavement diseases. In the analysis of multi-layers composite pavement design and evaluation, firstly according to the multi-layers stiffness contribution principle pavement model could be simplified, then calculation method of equivalent thickness and modulus for multi-layer composite pavement based on the rigidity is given. Secondly, by means of the finite element and software ABAQUS, the mechanical responses of asphalt overlayers have been analyzed through design parameters, crack(reflection crack and longitudinal crack) and rut. The design method based on the crack-rut control indicator could be then established. Thirdly, the calculation methods could be given about the modulus back-calculation for multi-layers composite pavement and pavement classification number PCN and the structural strength evaluation by rigid pavement evaluation system. Finally, the calculation method of pavement structural remaining life is obtained based on Miner's Law,proved to be applicability through Hongqiao Airport runway.
