Today, brownfield has become a sequela of rapid urbanization and industrialization across the world, negatively impacting the public health and preventing sustainable developments. In China, intensive urban developments without proper planning or regulations have led to a great number of brownfield and contaminated spots. Although contemporary restoration projects have achieved some progressive outcomes, further research and design practice are still needed to tackle more specific environmental problems. After covering the basic knowledge of brownfields restoration and bio-remediation, this article focuses on field research and case studies to generate more effective analyses and solutions. The content of the paper describes the meaning, concepts and traits of brownfield, summarizes its causes and effects, and outlines its pros and cons to urban development, as a way to systematically generate effective theories and technical supports for brownfield restoration. Based on research outcomes, the second part of the article proposes more detailed and practical design elements and measures for bio-remediation. With great focuses on landscape design, traditional cultural heritage and actual case studies, the article comes up with specific landscape design methods to remediate brownfield. The framework of the article includes:background studies ? ask questions ? analyze questions ? generate solutions ?summary and discussion.
