As the main implementers in flight, pilots are significant factors for flight safety. It is a key to reduce human errors of pilots and improve their safety performance. The fact shows that pilots who are different in personality are different in safety performance. In other words, safety performance of pilots is under the influence of their personalities. However, the relationship between personality and safety performance of pilots is not definite. In order to improve safety performance of pilots, select the civil aviation pilots as the study object, and carry out a thorough study on the relationship between personality and safety performance of pilots, which can be theoretical basis for reducing human errors of pilots and improving the safety of civil aviation. This study divided personality of pilots into five dimensions based on the Five Factors Model. And they are Nervous, Agreeableness, Openness, Extraversion and Conscientiousness. Besides, defined safety performance of pilots into two dimensions based on the analysis of relevant researches and they are safety result performance and safety process performance. Then supposed the relationships among five personality dimensions and two safety performance dimensions of pilots with the cognition and coping style of pilots, and made a hypothetical structural model. In order to get study data, designed a questionnaire which can measures the personality, safety performance, cognition and coping style of pilots. Checked the reliability and validity of the questionnaire, and carried out an investigation. At last, verified the hypothetical structural model with study data using AMOS23.The result showed that five personality dimensions have influence on safety performance of pilots directly or indirectly. Nervous and Extraversion have influence on safety performance of pilots indirectly by the cognition and coping style. Nervous or introverted pilots have poor cognition and negative coping style, and get poor safety performance. And Openness has influence on safety performance of pilots indirectly by the cognition. Open pilots have higher cognition, and get better safety performance generally. Agreeableness and Conscientiousness have influence on safety process performance of pilots directly. Agreeable or conscientious pilots perform well in safety process.
