In recent years, with the rapid development of social economy as well as promotion of urbanization and mechanization, the number of motor vehicle and roads increased sharply, which speeds up a frequent flow of manpower, money and goods. The flow of road traffic and traffic demand sharply expanding, the contradiction between citizens, cars and road traffic is becoming prominent, the pressure of traffic increasing day by day, and cities' traffic supply can not meet the rapid growth of it's demand, the level of infrastructure and management in this cities' system fail to adapt to the need of urban development, the problem of traffic congestion is becoming prominent, which have caused increase of people's cost both in travel time and money, and largely affecting people's life quality and travel efficiency. Xianyang is the geodetic origin and the hub and mega-city in the western of China.Urban transport supply Can not meet the rapid growth of traffic demand,transport infrastructure and management unable to adapt to the needs of urban development,affects the xianyang economic developm-ent and social progress. Throughout both at home and abroad, the urban traffic congestion has become the domestic cities and countries around the world universal problems in the process of urbanization.This essay, with pragmatic attitude, states the traffic condition and analyses the reasons of traffic congestion in Xianyang by surveys and data analysis, moreover, it puts up some countermeasures to solve the traffic jam. Traffic congestion is problem must be solved that keep sustainable development of city. The development of public transportation and its reasonable planning, design as well as management will effectively improve the traffic patency and safety, besides, it also promotes sustainable development of social economy. Therefore, the question of “how to effectively alleviate the traffic congestion?” is needed much consideration in the work of traffic management in city, which is necessary to create better traffic environment to reach the goals of rapid economic and social development. Firstly, the related theories about traffic and traffic congestion are introduced, and analyzed the jam congestion situation in different big cities, then, summed up the successful experience of domestic and international cities' traffic congestion problems. Meanwhile, the essay used former study for reference to set up a serial countermeasure to jam congestion in Xianyang.
