As one of the most important equipment in substation transformer plays an important role in the security and stability of the power grid, its fault diagnosis analysis has vital meaning for finding out the fault point or potential defects. At the same time, the analysis of the fault diagnosis strategy for power transformers has great guiding to the process of fault discovery.The power transformer fault diagnosis depends on the test, test process is based on whether the detection of operating equipment is divided into live and blackout two aspects, Infrared thermal image detection, dissolved gas analysis of oil,DC resistance test and the overall use of insulation testing are widely used and more accurately. The various detection techniques show the advantages through the case study.Three methods are introduced; they are the Failure Mode and affect Analysis (FMEA), expert system and grey association analysis. At the same time, two methods of FMEA and grey association analysis are introduced into the analysis of fault diagnosis strategy for the power transformer. Based on these two methods, an expert system is presented. At the same time, based on the local transformer fault data, the expert system uses the grey correlation analysis method to analyze the cause of the problem and the testing technology. It could point the way to improve the test sequence of fault detection, depended on the correlation order. This model is very useful to test fault.Expert system combined with the cause of the problem and fault phenomenon by the sources of transformer faults detection to design the more actual fault diagnosis strategy. This pattern is more useful to First-line operations staff, compared to introducing FMEA technology only.Combining with the design of power transformer fault diagnosis strategy, we analyze two typical transformer faults in the state overhaul.
