Due to the increasing size of the grid in recent years, the structure is more and more complex, and the resulting low frequency oscillation problem cannot be ignored.Conventional damping control is generally the choice of local measurement signal as its input signal, through the control role, for the local oscillation mode damping effect is better, but the damping for inter-area oscillation mode is limited,so for inter-area oscillation cannot be achieved very good suppression effect,inter-area oscillation is still the main problem to be solved urgently.Based on this background, the main contents are as follows:Firstly, the state space model of multi-machine power system is established, and the prediction equation and objective function of the model predictive control based on the state space model are deduced, and the retention matrix method is used to select the feedback signal of the controller, which lays the foundation for the design of the damping controller. Then,a new damping controller design method based on model predictive control is proposed. To damp inter-area low frequency oscillation, the controller is composed of two stages, its input signal consists of the wide-area measurement signal and the local measurement signal.Residue matrix method was used to select the wide-area control circuit and damping controller is configured by mode analysis. The model predictive controller is used for wide-area additional damping control and it is coordinated with the local PSS.The optimal control input for excitation controller is calculated by using model prediction and optimization in order to achieve dynamic coordination between voltage regulation and enhanced damping and improved the dynamic stability of the system. Finally,in order to test the control effect of the designed wide-area damping controller for power system based on model predictive control,a typical four-machine two-zone system and 10 machine 39-node system are used to simulate. The simulation results show that the control effect of the wide-area damping controller based on the MPC is superior to the traditional damping control.it can quickly adjust the terminal voltage and improve the damping level of the system.
