Fatigue driving is one of the leading causes for traffic accident and body injury. It is essential to quantificate driving fatigue and design a novel technique to monitor the fatigue level at driving for the prediction and prevention of severe fatigue and consequent accident.especially under prolonged driving duration.Near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)is a noninvasive, portable and relatively inexpensive technique monitoring brainactivities-related hemodynamic responses continuously.Visual voluntary attention, which is closely realted with social activities and diseases in driver fatigue, hyperactivity, ageing, and sleep, becames one of hot topics in both fields of neuroscience and medicine. We proposed to study cerebral hemodynamic response to visual attention in relative brain areas prefrontal areas with functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS).Here,we developed a fNIRS imager and set up a Go/Nogo-based testing paradigm to trigger visual voluntary attention which varied responding to driving fatigue, and attempted to record the drive-fatigue-level correlated hemodynamic response in the prefrontal cortex.Total 10 of volunteers(6 males,4 females)were recruited take 7 hours driving and the experimental test.We tried to use noninvasive fNIRS to assess the longscale characteristics of driving fatigue by evoked prefrontal hemodynamic signal to voluntary attention and the experimental test was repeated every 1 hour and 7 times in total. The data analysis showed that one channel responding to left prefrontal lobe for [HbO2] exhibited significant behavioral-brain relationship during prolonged driving(r=-0.896,p=0.003).The findings founded the fNIRS-measured hemodynamic index in some sensitive spot of left prefrontal lobe to indicate driving fatigue level.Meanwhile, our custom instrument was used in real driving to assess fatigue level to remind the driver to take a break when they enter into fatigue status. It might be an effective way to reduce deaths and injuries on road traffic accidents.
