More than half of the faults in the power system is caused by lightning,it is of great significance for economic and stable operation of the power system to analyze the thunder electric wave overvoltage, study its protective measures. This paper summarized the research status both at home and abroad, and introduced the latest progress on the research direction and dynamically of lightning protection in power system at home and abroad. This paper first analyzed the principle of gas discharge and ray waves, this paper introduced the gas discharge in common two theories: Townsend discharge theory and streamer theory.Townsend discharge theory is mainly suitable for low pressure short gap, streamer discharge theory is mainly suitable for high pressure and long gap.On this basis, this paper discusses the main mechanism of ray waves, and introduces the main parameters of thunder electric wave in the power system.EMTP power system transient analysis software is introduced, and discussed the main electric parameter modeling method and calculation of the EMTP software process. On this basis,in this paper, the direct tower and lightning waves caused by lightning intruded into the substation process are simulated. The voltage waveform at the main points of substation insulation under the condition of thunder electric wave is calculated, which is helpful for the design of substation insulation.Combining the actual configuration experience of lightning rod and lightning arrester, this paper analyzed the scheme of transmission line and substation lightning protection. The main effectiveness of Lightning rod and lightning arrester is discussed. For different environment, the optimized configuration scheme is given.
