For the flow distribution of side intake/outlet of pumped storage plant,design guide stipulates that the uneven degree of flow distribution between adjacent middle and side channel should be less than 10%,but the actual engineering design fails to meet the rule.There are many researches on the flow distribution of side intake/outlet at home and abroad,but the systematic solutions had not been put forward.A side intake/outlet of the upper reservoir of pumped storage station is sdudied as the research object in this paper.First,a original side intake/outlet is studied with three-dimensional k-? turbulent model and physical modelling experiment.The numerical results consistent with the experimental results.In the next place,The flow distributions are investigated by adjusting the width ratio of middle to side channel of guide piers in diffusion reach,the location of middle guide pier's head in diffusion reach,and the length of diffusion reach.It is showed that the width ratio between middle and side channel of guide piers,the length of diffuser and the location of middle guide pier 's head of diffuser have the decisive effect on flow distribution.The uneven degree of flow distribution can be improved effectively and close to 10% the uneven degree of the flow distribution between the adjacent middle and side channel when the width of middle channel of guide piers is 0.24D(the “D” is the diameter of tunnel),the width of side channel of guide piers is 0.26 D,the width ratio between middle and side channel of guide piers is 0.24:0.26,the length of diffuser is 5.7D and the retractive length of middle guide pier's head is 0.43 D.The length of transition section has a relatively small impact on the uneven degree of flow distribution.Finally,In order to verify the feasibility of optimization measures,the flow distributions of original and optimized shapes of another side intake/outlet of the upper reservoir of pumped storage station are investigated.It is showed that the flow distribution of side intake/outlet of optimized shape is improved obviously,the uneven degree of the flow distribution between the adjacent middle and side channel reduce significantly,the feasibility of optimization measures are verified.
