Transparent soil is a two-phase media that consists of transparent surrogate and refractive index matched liquid. Transparent surrogate and refractive index matched liquid represents natural soil particle and pore fluid respectively. As a result, transparent soil is widely utilized in geotechnical test to model natural soil. Recent studies developed several kinds of transparent soil with different geotechnical properties. To some extent, such transparent soil is available in full simulation of natural soil. By running simulation of natural soil, transparent soil is introduced to investigate internal geotechnical properties non-intrusively and continuously. Compared to that conventional measurement methodology in geotechnical test, visualization of transparent soil provides experimental results without interference of sensors. With greater insight into movement of soil particle, transparent soil is cheaper and more applicable than X-ray, nuclear magnetic reasonance and so on. Besides, DIC (Digital Image Correlation) is applied in visualization of transparents soil regarding its internal flow, displacement and deformation. In visualization of transparent soil, considering that either image quality or accuracy of DIC is correlated with transparency quality,so the fundamental premise of this research is to assess transparency of transparent soil in an objective framework. On a basis of previous research both at home and abroad, fused quartz is proposed as transparent surrogate while mixture of white mineral oil and solvent oil consist transparent liquid, transparent soil with fused quartz is produced to analyze the transparency of transparent soil and its impact on visualization of transparent soil as follows:(1) According to principle of photometry, transmittance is proposed to evaluate transparency of transparent soil. Firstly, calculation and measurement of transmittance is introduced. Furthermore, principle of Christiansen Effect contributes to explain variation of transmittance in transparent soil regarding its change in reractive index matching and viewing depth. Besides, it is concluded that bubbles within transparent soil hinder the improvement of transparency quality.(2) Impact of transmittance of the transparent soil on its visualization is investigated. For one hand, transmittance of transparent soil is correlated with its image quality by establishing an evaluation function of image quality. For another hand, variation accuracy of DIC for transparent soil with different transmittance is described by experimental data, so as to reveal the correlation between transmittance and accuracy of DIC in visualization of transparent soil.
