Most toppling deformation were found on anti-dip slopes, but the toppling deformation on bedding slopes in some mines, hydropower station and highway have been found. This kind of toppling deformation has great research value, because currently the research results about the characteristic and evolution mechanism of this kind of toppling deformation are relatively rare at home and abroad. Combining with the national natural science fund project "Behavior and mechanism of deformation of pit surrounding rock after open-pit mining to underground mining ", the characteristics of the toppling deformation on bedding slopes were studied and summarized systematically in this article based on the toppling deformation on bedding rock slopes in Jinchuan open-pit mine. The mechanism and evolution characteristics of the toppling deformation on bedding rock steep slopes were studied using physical simulation, numerical simulation. The main results include:(1)The development process, deformation characteristics and mechanism of toppling deformation on bedding rock slopes in the open-pit mine were found out through literature review and field investigation. The main toppling control conditions were summarized on the basis of the further study of the characteristics of this kind of topple through literature review.(2)The causes of the mechanism of the toppling deformation on the steep bedding slopes were studied using physical simulation, numerical simulation .It is concluded that the two necessary conditions for topples on bedding rock slope are: the bedding structural planes are in slope foot;the bedding structural plane angles are steep.(3) The software PFC was applied to simulate the deformation evolution process on the open-pit mine slope. Slope deformation evolution mechanism and the structural plane toppling deformation characteristics were studied and summarized from the perspectives including crack evolution, particle rotation and displacement. Results showed that the shear deformation occurs in the slope foot, the tensile deformation occurs in the slope shoulder and top. The bedding structure plane topples under the action of shear stress, and the deformation degree rapidly decreases with the depth increasing.
