The blades of engine may be damaged by impact of foreign objects, and this kind of foreign object damage is usually called FOD for short. The damage caused by FOD is very severe, it has been proved in many cases that many foreign objects on the raceways of airport can be easily sucked into engine, causing engine failure; chips may build up in mechanical devices, which may affect the normal operation of undercarriage, airfoil and so on. This not only damages airplane and takes away our precious lives but also cause enormous economical losses. At present, the supervising work on raceways of most domestic airports is mainly carried out by manpower and the raceway will be closed when doing the job. This not only leads to low efficiency of aircraft traffic capacity and low reliability but also occupies valuable raceway time. When running in a state of ground proximity, aero-engine will ingest small stones, gravel, rivets and other hard objects moving with high-speed airflow, leading to foreign object damage to the blades of fan/compressor. Under the action of high cycle fatigue load, FOD can easily induce fatigue crack initiation and rapid propagation, causing fatigue fracture failure of blade, which thereby severely threatens flight safety. Therefore, the development of FOD research will be of great importance to reducing and preventing flight accident caused by FOD as far as possible, and thereby safely using of the engine and flight safety can be guaranteed. The macro and micro damage characteristics of FOD were analyzed statistically in the blade of a certain type of engine fault. Research shows that the damage location damage of blade is mainly distributed in the central air inlet edge and exhaust edge of the blade, the blade edge from the central to the distribution density of root and tip gradually increased. The damage is the main FOD damage form of the steel hard objects with more Fe elements in the damaged leaves. Using air gun test system, the FOD's effective simulation was carried out on the TC4 flat plate, and the HCF fatigue strength of the damaged specimen was tested and studied. The results show that the fatigue strength of FOD is obviously decreased. The fatigue fracture analysis of the damaged specimens shows that FOD provides favorable conditions for the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks.
