The pressure loss is one of the important indicators of the muffler performance,especially for such heavy machinery of the ship,it directly affects the power of engine and the service life of muffler.the location and size parameters of the four basic muffler elements that the expansion chamber,import and export pipe,intubation,and perforated tube,which directly determine the pressure loss of the muffler.In order to reducing the pressure loss of muffler,this article adopts the numerical simulation method to explore the basic the influence law of muffler elements for the pressure loss.This paper proves that the measuring method of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)is superior to the semi-empirical method,and using software FLUENT to explore pressure loss influenced by the flow velocity and temperature,expansion ratio,the length and the location of intubation,the quantity and the diameter of outlet pipe,and the perforation rate or the perforation position of perforated tube in expansion muffler.Then according to the above analyzing results,and combining with the existing theories,the optimization scheme of muffler elements is putted forward for a specific ship exhaust muffler,and the pressure loss of the improved muffler can be reduced obviously.Finally a simple testing device of pressure loss using common mechanical equipments,it can measures the pressure loss in any different flow velocity and temperature.
