The problem of greenhouse gas?GHG?emissions and their effect on global warming are becoming are more and more urgent problem. In order to counteract the GHG emissions of the transportations sector, various measure have been discussed. These measures include the implementation of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles?PHEVs?.This thesis examines the carbon footprint of PHEVs for the Beijing driving pattern. In order to quantify the energy use,GHG,and PM2.5 emissions of the PHEVs for the Beijing driving pattern, the life cycle analysis software Greenhouse Gases,Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation?GREET?is used and modified for Chinese circumstances. As an input to the model, simulated data for the energy efficiency of the PHEVs as well as a conventional, hybrid electric, and battery electric vehicle in the Beijing driving cycles are used. For the PM2.5 emissions three scenarios for the emission factors of coal fired power plants in China are presented. The results show that the implementation of electrified vehicles offer great benefits concerning GHG emissions as well as PM2.5 emissions compared to conventional gasoline vehicles. The hybrid electric vehicle emits 57% less GHG than the conventional vehicle for the average Beijing driving pattern, while the PHEVs reduce life cycle GHG emissions by 48-54%.
