In ice engineering, people can take advantage of ice as a carrier, but have to prevent ice disaster sometimes,no matter what sides, the mechanical properties of ice are very important parameters, including compressive strength, tensile strength, fracture toughness and so on.Research on the mechanical properties of ice started early and the testing methods are different.Under the premise of increased demand for ice mechanical properties from polar and sub-polar water conservancy project, shipping engineering, this article try to apply the Brazilian test which is widely applied in rock to the field of ice,for testing the mechanical properties. The purpose is not just to acquire some strength parameters of ice,but also verify reliability of the test in ice and then introduce it to the research of the polar and sub-polar ice, thus contributing to ‘the Belt and Road' in polar and sub-polar region.Through the loading experiment to Yellow River ice,we acquire the maximum value of tensile strength.According to the present test result,we analyze the rate effect, temperature effect, size effect of tensile strength. Then we demonstrate the feasibility of Brazilian test method for determining tensile strength of ice further.According to the result of fracture toughness,we analyze the relationship between fracture toughness and strain rate, temperature, size of specimen, demonstrating the feasibility of Brazilian test method for determining fracture toughness. When we load application to the ice specimen using the Brazilian test method, not every specimen is able to get an effective curve, which can be used to calculate the mechanical properties. In order to seek higher success rate of Brazilian test,we have made different types of ice specimen using the ice from Wu Liang Su Hai,for exploring the effect on the success rate from diameter, loading angle and the center hole.Through loading application to each group of specimen,we count the number of corresponding effective curve and analyze the success rate of different group. At last, this article concludes: the success rate is highest when the ice specimen is non-center hole and it's diameter is 90 mm,the loading angle belong to 25°~30°.
